１９３８年Judy Garlandが映画”オズの魔法使い”で
”Over the rainbow”を歌い大ヒットさせました。
その時代アメリカは大恐慌の後の厳しい時代で
彼女の歌がアメリカを多いに勇気づけたと言われています。
調べてみますと
作曲者はHarold Arlen、、もともとは
違う人に曲の依頼があったということですが
病み上がりの第一候補の作曲家ではなく
Arlen氏が書くこととなったそうです。
彼はミュージカルの曲を書くのは難しいと
思っていて、、早く書かないとと思いながら
プレッシャーもありなかなか書けずにいたところ
リラックスしたいからと
奥さんに出かけようと言って
奥さんに車の運転をさせていた時に
彼曰く、、
”神さまがさあ、、ここにあるよ
心配するのはやめなさい、、”という
声を聞いて曲ができたそうです。
俗にいう、、”降りて来たんですね。”
作詞はYip Harburg、、
せっかくArlen氏が作曲したのに
彼は小さな少女が歌っている感じがしない、、
オーケストラの為の音楽のようだ、、と気に入らなかったそうです。
そこでArlen氏はHarburgも尊敬しているという
George Gershｗin（Summer time, I got the rythm等の作曲者）
の兄Ira Gershwinに曲を聴いてもらって
Harburg氏にアドバイスをしてもらい
子供っぽい歌詞をつけて
無事”Over the rainbow”が完成したそうです。
まさに生みの苦しみがあったのですね。
